£10,000 Lottery Award

Woodlands Academy awarded £10,000 from National Lottery!  Awards for All logo

Woodlands Academy are thrilled to announce they have been awarded a £10,000 grant from The National Lottery Awards for All Scheme. This great news means that installation of an outdoor Parkour Circuit can now begin and intern engage the students more at playtimes.

Every child at Woodlands Academy has an Educational Health Care Plan (Statement of Special Educational Needs). Their needs are complex with many of the pupils having an additional diagnoses of ASD, Asperger’s Syndrome, ODD, OCD and attachment disorder, to name but a few.

For these reasons, traditional approaches to physical fitness and emotional wellbeing often do not engage or motivate our pupils. However, many of the pupils are very interested in Parkour and currently engage in free running activities within their communities, often placingParkour example2 themselves at risk of serious injury and criminal activity (trespass or damage to community property). We strongly believe that the installation of a Parkour Circuit within the safety of the school grounds will enable us to engage, motivate and enthuse the students to make positive choices about their health, physical fitness and mental wellbeing.

Parkour is an attractive discipline because there is no right or wrong way to carry out a move. Pupils will be free to use their imagination and be as creative as they wish about the way in which they challenge themselves. It is an extremely physical sport and attractive to young people, engaging them in exercise in a non-traditional way. Parkour practiced safely, offers many health benefits both physical and mental including: losing weight, keeping fit, improving co-ordination and balance, having fun and raising endorphin levels to improve mood.

Chris Armond, Executive Headteacher, said, “We would like to say a huge thank you to the Lottery for their significant donation that will allow us to begin installation of the Parkour circuit. We are fundraising internally to try and make up the shortfall of the £15,000 target. This new facility is going to give the children a fantastic opportunity to be regularly active throughout the day, heightening the importance of safety and living a healthy life style.”
